Arrowmont Artists-In-Residence Exhibition at Middle Tennessee State University

We set up our first exhibition of 2012 at MTSU on Saturday. The show is open to the public on January 12th and will run through the month of January. Wednesday January 18th will feature artist talks from 11:30am to 12:30pm and will be followed by a 6:00-8:00pm opening reception. We have included a couple images of our instillation with more completed instillation shots to come. Please visit the show or join us for our reception on the 18th.

Check out current resident Chandra DeBuse's new work online now through November 17th at Charlie Cummings Gallery. Her exhibition is titled, Playscapes and is a response to living in South Florida and the mountains of Eastern Tennessee over the past year. In her exhibition statement, she writes:

Recently I moved from south Florida to the mountains of eastern Tennessee. Although Gatlinburg and West Palm Beach are 800 miles apart and are situated in different climates, the similarities between the two places are remarkable. Both areas contain natural landscapes of astounding beauty, but many visitors forego trips to the ocean or the mountains for a more contrived setting, such as a world-class golf resort, theme park, or outlet mall. Through observing landscapes of leisure in these two regions: (parks, golf courses, beaches, swimming pools), I am inspired to create voluminous three-dimensional forms with manicured, controlled surfaces and divided spaces. I create salt and pepper landscapes, multi-level treat servers, and jars, plates, cups, or bowls with hand-drawn characters engaging in various playful activities. Because I consider all surfaces of my objects as canvas, imagery often wraps around a piece. These objects become playscapes for pattern and character to frolic, inviting human fingers to also roam the topography, seeking out their own morsels of delight. . Often it is only through experiencing the piece: physically holding it, exploring it, and hopefully using it, can the whole image be seen. It is my hope that through this interaction between user and object, a playful attitude is sparked.

Puppy loves the fruit that is falling all over the library patio and other places around Arrowmont. He seems to be no longer afraid of people which prompted Park Rangers to set a trap. So Far Puppy has walked right past the Crispy Cream laden bear cage in favor of the abundant berries and crab apples on campus. Run Puppy Run!

This has been a very special week for the resident artists, as we birthed our first collaborative project: a brand-new studio sign. The sign takes the shape of a super-jumbo sized notebook paper: complete with spiral binding and a post-it note! It also can be raised and lowered on a pulley system. How smokin' hot is that?

As awesome as the sign looks now, we realize that it is not quite complete. After all, how can you have a notebook without any doodles? We are all going to work on adding some wacky doodle embellishments within the next week or so. We'll keep ya posted. (Anyone know where we can get a giant thumb tack?)

This week we held our first raffle to raise money for the resident artist fund. We are so appreciative of all the support from the folks on campus who bought tickets. Four lucky winners were announced today during lunch.

Congratulations to: Nick DeFord, Textiles instructor who won Dustin Farnsworth's four prints (2 stone litho and 2 letterpress); Sarah West, Educational Assistant and metalsmith who won Lisa Johnson's Knob Ring; Jim Norton, Glass student who won Chandra DeBuse's Swimming Pool Salt and Pepper Set; and Steve Hewitt, Glass student who won Phil Haralam's large bowl. We have a new studio mate named Puppy. He is a 300 pound black bear that visits out studio every couple days. Hopefully we can get a photo in the following weeks and share it on the blog.

The Exhibition will be on display through September 30th and features the work of Hunt Clark, Gail Fredell, Robin Horn, Stoney Lamar, Simon Levy, Robert F. Lyon, Philip Moulthrop, Matt Moulthrop, George Peterson, Sylvie Rosenthal <3, Norm Sartorius, David Sengel, and Bob Trotman. The Clay Studio, Philadelphia: The Sixth Annual Marge Brown Kalodner Graduate Student Exhibition

For all you Arrowmont followers in the Philly area, current resident Phil Haralam is included in the The Eighth Annual Marge Brown Kalodner Graduate Student Exhibition at the Clay Studio in Philadelphia. The opening is Friday June 3rd from 5:00 to 9:00pm and the show runs until until July 24th. Go meet Phil at the opening and see the work. Trust us, it's worth it!

We, the 2011 - 2012 Resident Artists: Chandra, Dustin, Lisa and Phil are settling into our new house and studios. One of our first visitors was this snazzy-looking millipede. Watch his legs form waves as he makes his way across a table in the resident artist studios.

The reception was amazing, let me just tell you! We ate, we drank, we partied with all our friends and families. Everyone was lucky enough to have family members come to town. The resident house was packed with parents inhabiting the front porch on a 24 hour schedule. It was a great weekend, and we now have bags of chicken in the freezer! The food was over ordered just a bit, but it was delicious! Thank you El Primo II!! We were also lucky enough to have the dazzling talents of Sir Kevin McGuire providing us with lovely musical entertainment. The hokie pokie was rocked out at the end of the evening, for the tiny guest.

This past weekend, Shawn, Andy and Jenn all traveled to Chattanooga for the Four Bridges Art Festival. Friday was rainy, Saturday was windy, but Sunday was just right! We met many fabulous people and of course could never say enough wonderful things about AVA and everyone working with/for them. Pictures to come of both the reception and Four Bridges!

We know everyone has been watching the news as images and stories come in from Japan. An amazing ceramic artist Ayumi Horie has set up an online fundraising auction for Japan. 100 % of the proceeds will go to Global Giving's Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund. The auction is set to take place between March 24th- March 27th. We're asking for you to please pass this along to everyone you know, every little bit helps. Thanks everyone.

Well the first weekend workshop has come and gone! This year Arrowmont extended the weekend workshops by one day, and the reviews went well. We started thursday evening with a few hours of instruction and getting everyone familiar with studios. Friday morning we all hit the ground running!

Andy taught a figurative ceramics class and rocked out, making up to the last moment and putting the hot box to good use. Jennifer's enameling class had the kilns going all weekend, making and laughing as hard as they could. Both Andy and Jenn had an amazing time teaching the workshops, and can't wait until next time.

The residents would like to send a huge THANK YOU out to everyone who came this weekend. The energy on campus was amazing to have after the long winter. The staff was excited, the instructors and students were amazingly wonderful and of course the work study rocked it out! We are super stoked for this next year of workshops and are already looking forward to this coming thursday when we get a whole new group in!

Also, as a side note spring had sprung here in Gatlinburg and the flowers are up! Daffodils, tulips, forsythia, japanese magnolia and those tiny pale purple flowers by the road are all in bloom! Jenn is raiding the flower beds to decorate her hair and constantly getting chased away by Big D and Big E, the two men who keep Arrowmont's grounds looking so beautiful!

Hello again, sorry to have been gone for so long. A few updates, our show is getting closer so we are all in the grind of making lots.

We also wanted to share with everyone a website about the Radical Jewelry Makeover, this is a project that is a collaboration of re-made jewelry. Donations in the form of "old" jewelry are made and then revamped by students and volunteer jewelers. A wonderful project, the pieces that have been made from RJM are beautiful and inspiring.

Residency at Arrowmont also has its perks. Recently we were honored with a backstage tour of the Ripley's Aquarium across the street from Arrowmont. We got to stand nearby as Sharks were fed, pet an octopus and learned how much it cost to feed a leafy sea dragon each week. They only eat live food.. the name I don't fully recall, something along the lines of snailmice? krillmice, maybe?

We also have a lovely photo of our dear ceramic residents showing off their mad clay working skills at Roswell Art Center West, Ga. The audience was spell bound, even if the jokes were bad. Both Shawn and Andy greatly enjoyed their time there and appreciated the support of everyone who participated.

Well Hello to the New YEAR!!! 2011!! whoooo hooo! Everyone has returned from a restful Christmas Holiday and we are all jumping back into the swing of things here. This week we are sadly taking down the Figurative Symposium Exhibition, but good news the Sevier County Biennial Juried Exhibition is going up! Everything will be installed by this Friday, just in time for the opening reception.

Next week we begin teaching adult and children's community art classes! Our show is going up in about 2 months and we are all feeling the pressure building... building .... building!!!! AH! Care packages containing baked goods, toothpaste and whiskey, will be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much! You are all such dears.

Also, our busy ceramic residents are headed to Georgia this weekend to set up their show at the Art Center West. Above is their show card. Hope for Hope

We are posting a link to the Hope for Hope blog, in the hopes that some of our fellow artist will contribute to this cause. Hope Rovelto is a ceramic artist who, on November 4th was hit by a hit-in-run driver. She has undergone and is continuing to undergo surgeries for her legs. Her medical bills have already begun to pile up and this is where we come in. An art auction will take place January 30th to help raise funds to pay for Hope's continuing medical bills. As always we are rocking out. Last month we taught ArtReach classes to students from the local schools. We had 7 schools come this year, grades ranging from 5th to 12th. It was great to be able to work with so many enthusiastic students, but by the time 2:00 came around we were all exhausted. Since then, things have calmed down quite a bit. Full days in the studio!!! YAHHH!!! Andy has been shipping out work to shows in Texas and New Mexico. Shawn and Andy are both getting ready for a show in Rowsell,Ga at the Art Center West. Wyatt is working on a desk, continuing with his brick pattern. Jenn is working on a few ring commissions, and everyone is getting in the Holiday spirit! All day and night the tree across the street at the Aquarium has a light show going and there is christmas music playing when we wake up, when we go to sleep, when we brush our teeth. Next week we will start heading home, to Maine, Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky we go! On Dancer, On Zoezif, On Sonnor, On Blitzed!

It was a three keg symposium! And it was fabulous, darling! The people, the food, the lectures, the drinks, the demos, all amazing! Thaddeus Erdahl even set a piece on fire during his demo! Last Tuesday night a terrible event took Place on Arrowmont's campus. A gourd was brutally beheaded on the resident's front porch. The weapon was left at the scene of the crime, but no prints were able to be recovered. Investigators arrived on the scene and began questioning the residents and work studies who had been having a polite social gathering only a few feet away. Amazingly enough no one saw or heard a thing. Fredrick had always been a very quiet gourd. The family gathered around their beloved Fredrick to say a final farewell. Services will be held this coming Sunday the 31st. All flowers, food city gift cards and canned goods should be sent to the resident's home address. Thank you all for your concern. We will be sure to keep you updated as the investigation continues.

Hello once again! New and exciting things are happening on the Arrowmont campus! This week we are in the process of "changeover", taking down the Instructors exhibition *tear* and installing the exhibition for the Figurative Symposium. Ceramic sculptures! Some life size!!! All amazing!!! Today we had the privilege of working with Andrea Keys Connell and help her install her amazing larger than life sculptures. Installation should be finished this friday under the supervision of Ms. Amazing Karen Green, who has us running around the gallery prepping here and hanging there, just as good minions should. Hopefully we will get to see everyone of your faces at the Figurative Symposium, it promises to be the event of the year and we would hate for you to miss it! There will be demos and lectures by some of the most amazing ceramic artists in the country, dinning, dancing under the stars, and amazing conversation by fire light, what more could you ask for? Convinced yet? I know we had to twist your arm, sorry.

Hello again, yes we've been gone awhile. We're sorry we know how you feel. But we promise we were thinking about you the whole time.

A quick update for those of you who just can't get enough. Last week we traveled to Murray State University in Murray Kentucky to set up our first group show! yah!

We came back to Arrowmont on Tuesday to help the amazing gallery director Karen Green set up for the live auction on thursday night! Oh the excitement! The artwork was amazing! We can not thank everyone enough for their support and generosity. Over 10,000 was raised for Arrowmont's scholarship and educational program!!

Friday morning after the auction, we jumped in the car and raced back to Murray State Univ. where we gave presentations on our work and then attended the opening reception from 6-8 in the Upper Gallery (7th floor)- The show will be up for two weeks, so if your in the neighborhood stop on by and let us know what you think. We'll post pictures for those of you who can't make it- don't worry.

A BIG Thank You to everyone who supported us during this raffle! Friday at 1:00 we had raised a total of $740.00. Ethel Hamlin, who works for Arrowmont and won the Shawn O'Connor teapot went above and beyond, when she gifted the teapot back to the auction and allowed for it to be sold. Adding an additional $100.00 to our total. We can not begin to tell everyone how excited we are about the final outcome and we want to thank you all very much for helping us along our way. Now the hard work of designing and putting together a catalog with four crazy artists will begin!!!

We hiked all the way up! Chimney Tops! It was steep going, but the view at the top is amazing! You get to climb on a tricky rock face at the very top, but as long as you use the ladder or billy goat approach, you should be fine.

Sorry to keep everyone in suspense for so long, but here you finally have it. A new posting! Oh joy! We have successfully completed many more bonding activities. Everyone is sporting a new haircut, and we are all feeling the burn from our ritual Saturday hikes, which range from 2 - 8.5 miles. So far we have ventured to Ramsey Cascades and Rainbow Falls. Both beautiful and amazing! Aside from our extracurricular activities, we have actually been making work. Believe it or not! Kilns have been fired! Metal has been waxed! Wood has been oiled! We also were recently given the responsibility to do a photo shoot to promote the fabulous Arrowmont catalog, which you should all have on your night stand. The lucky winning image was of Marissa Saneholtz, Bob Ebendorf's visiting artist for a two-week class in metals.

We have all arrived and the studios are set up! If you're in the area come by the school for our first slide show this coming Monday the 21st at 7:30pm. We will also be having open studios every Wednesday, 4:30- 5:30, where you can taste test some of the mountains most delicious popcorn and boxed wine.

Our first few days have been filled with meeting new amazing and wonderful people and learning about California dates. ( We recently received a tutorial in google docks.) This weekend we have plans for hiking and exploring, so get ready from some pictures!!

The residents are gearing up to move on. And the thunder and rain has come to shoo us on our way today!

Our time here at Arrowmont has been jam packed with new experiences, new friends, and a family we have gained as a result of accepting the opportunity to join Arrowmont for a year of our lives. It has been unforgettable and life changing in so many ways.

The work study and studio assistants have been arriving over the past couple of days, and we know the new residents will be here soon and experience a whirlwind of a summer into the fall, with classes taking place, and new friends being made. We're excited for them!

All of us will be starting a new journey, in a new place, with the exception of TJ. Well, he'll get the new journey, but he is staying right here at Arrowmont! TJ applied along with many, many others in hopes of becoming Program Coordinator here at the school. TJ started work on Thursday, and we haven't seen much of him since! We're excited for him, and know that he will be an asset to everyone he will work with and for. He is such an extremely talented artist and person.

Martina will be heading to North. She will be teaching ceramics at a small, private college in Marlboro, Vermont- Marlboro College. They are lucky to have her with the diversity of knowledge that she has about production work, the art and craft of the field of ceramics, and her unique decorating skills. The students are going to love her!

Kent will be fulfilling his Windgate scholarship, amongst many other ventures! He and his dad are building a woodworking studio on their property in Virginia. As part of his Windgate plan, he will head to Japan, as well as Martha's Vineyard (and more) to learn the traditional ways that wooden yacht's and sailboats are made. His skills will take him far and already have... there is a constant knock at his door with new opportunities.

I will be heading to Flagstaff, AZ, where I earned my BFA in metals. I will be teaching metalsmithing courses at Northern Arizona University. I'm excited to be heading west again, and have so much I want to share with the students involving technique in the field and professional development; and I am excited to travel with them to the Yuma Symposium and SNAG Conferences.

We will all continue to squeeze in as much art making as possible. New developments will be exciting. We have certainly been spoiled by so much time for art making here at Arrowmont, but we are better people for it! I wish everyone could have the Arrowmont experience. It has been a lot of fun sharing our time here with you all- our readers, and we hope you will stick around to see what's happening for the next crew! With our departure coming so soon, I am thinking a little (a lot) about some of the things that made being a resident at Arrowmont so neat.

Each day when we eat, we choose from the many generations of cups, bowls and dishes left behind by former residents. I love the history! I enjoy the fact that this collection will continue to grow- and already has. You can see some of Martina's cups in the cabinet below:

The end of May signals the end of our time here at Arrowmont. We wanted to take this opportunity to introduce you to the new residents that will begin their term here in the middle of June. Andrea Moon and Shawn O'Conner will be the incoming ceramics residents. Wyatt Severs is the wood resident and Jennifer Wells will be here in Metals. Please visit their websites and seek further information. Welcome them if you are here this summer. We wish them all the best!

Wyatt Severs, originally from Murray Kentucky, attended Murray State University, KY (2000-2009) and was the teaching assistant for Paul Sasso. Wyatt recently completed a 3 month apprenticeship with woodturner, Graeme Priddle in New Zealand.

Andrea Moon, originally from Columbus, Ohio, currently teaching as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Art at Texas A&M University in Laredo. An MFA in Ceramics/ Secondary in Sculpture from Texas Tech University, Lubbock, TX and BFA from Bowling Green University, OH.

Jennifer Wells, originally from Goshen, VA. MFA in Metal Design from East Carolina University and her BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Shawn O’Connor, originally from Minot, ME, a current MFA candidate in Ceramics from Syracuse University, NY with a BFA in ceramics from Maine College of Art.

As our days at Arrowmont are coming closer to ending, the residents had a final open studio. We lit up the grill, and cleaned up the messes in our studios to make way for visitors from the staff, community, the Arrowmont Board, and our friends...

The closing reception was a lot of fun with both Victoria's and Kent's family in town. everyone pitched in to help and the reception went off without a hitch - now it's time to take down and install the Summer Instructors Exhibition and pack up our studios...

4 Bridges Art Festival

Tj and his girlfriend, Stephanie Stuefer are off to participate in the 4 Bridges Art Festival in Chatanooga this weekend. They were both selected from a group of entries as emerging artists, and their experience at the 4 Bridges Art Festival is all expense paid!

They have had many sleepless nights this week getting ready, and we wish them luck! Here is a tiny sampling of their amazing work:

Tj made these little heads. They fit in the palm of your hand, and hang on the wall...

...and Stephanie created these wall sconces to hold flowers. They are also palm sized, and beautiful!

Things are starting to fall into place for our opening on Friday. These pictures were taken early on in the day. By nightfall, the space was truly transformed. Stay tuned for more pics! In the meantime... work, work, work, vinyl to attach, labels to make, sweeping and mopping- and most importantly, finishing up those loose ends in our studios!

Two days down, two to go! The gallery is a blank slate awaiting the arrival of fresh art made in Gatlinburg. The show opens Friday... there is so much left to do! Visiting Artists

Tj, Kent and myself took the trip to Middle Tennessee State University on Wednesday to give artist lectures. We had a great time and enjoyed connecting with the students and faculty at MTSU.

We were able to share our life experience with the arts, our work, our influences, and our time at Arrowmont. The residents were invited by Erin Anfinson, faculty member at MTSU as well as visiting faculty here at Arrowmont. She is a painter and studio artist living in Murfreesboro- please do check out her work! We thank her very much for the invitation and for providing us with this experience.

This is the Todd Building at MTSU: home to the art department. Centrally located on campus, they have beautiful facilities. We were impressed with the space; and the quality of each studio. Our trip to Murfreesboro was timed perfectly to coincide with all the student artwork hanging from a recent critique.

When our lectures were finished, we were able to have one on one studio visits with students. This was a great experience. Having the chance to connect further and discuss concept, approach, construction, professionalism and taking the next steps to remain in the arts after school.

This was the first time we had all been back on a college campus since completing our degrees in the spring. It was great to see the student life and remember the environment that we have so recently come from. Time has been passing quickly since we have been at Arrowmont, seeing the students bustling around was a reminder of how quickly it will continue to go!

Social Cumulation

TJ and I installed our show at the Roswell Art Center West this past weekend. Titled 'Social Cumulation', we consider the role of social expectations in the presentation of ourselves and our collections. Above is a view of the rear gallery. TJ's drawings are sometimes preparatory to the work, and other times a reflection on it once it has been completed. I installed a wall of plates, elaborating on the surface of the wall with place mat silhouettes and a circular repeated pattern. The Crown jars are thrown and altered with lustered lids and details.

The sun was out today and it felt like spring. Community classes have begun so we are all busy teaching as well as feverishly making work for our exhibition. It falls earlier this year and will run from March 5 until May 1.

This was the view from the back porch of Pollard Saturday morning... what a treat to wake up to!

Holiday classes also went on all day. Visitors created felted ornaments, fused glass ornaments, ceramic face jars, enameled ornaments, band saw boxes, turned honey dippers and candle holders. The snow made it truly feel like the holidays had arrived, as well as having so many friendly faces on campus. Check out some of the other spots on campus:

Women in Wood

Autumn is here, and with it came the Women in Wood exhibition in the main gallery here at Arrowmont. A beautiful selection of contemporary woodwork from a large number of women woodworkers includes everything from turned forms, furniture, sculptural objects and wall pieces. It is truly an inspiring selection of work, curated by Karen Green. Her vision is amazing, and the exhibition's variety of color, texture and form provide a clear view of what local, national and international female woodworkers are up to in their studios. A real treat for the eyes!

Uninvited Guests

While the guests we receive each day are uninvited, they are most interesting! Big or small, we are experiencing every aspect of life in the Smokies. It is unlike anywhere else!

The insects, while huge and strangely unique, are miniscule compared to the threat of running into families of bear on the trails, or coming home to them after a good hike. Kent took these pictures from his bedroom window. We came home to a sow and two cubs... just hanging out in the front yard eating thistle seed and tearing things up.

In View of the Smokies

On Friday night, the residents minus one- Martina is in Moscow- attended the opening reception for the exhibition In View of the Smokies: celebrating 75 years. Karen Green put the exhibit together. It showcases local photographers who capture the Great Smokey Mountain National Park. Large scale panoramas, views from vistas, and intimate moments were all a part of the 75 piece exhibit highlighting the work of 15 photographers. There was a great turnout for the opening, complete with Maxine's spread of Appalachian food. What a beautiful show- and we are so lucky to live in the midst of what this work represents.

Congrats to resident alumni Alicia Boswell for her inclusion in Metalsmith magazine's juried exhibition in print- Saturated: Color and Metal. Two of Alicia's brooches were included, they each measure 2.5 x 1.5 x 1", and are entitled Parthenogeny (l), and Salient (r).

The Garden

It was a hot day to work on the little patch, but worth it. Finally a new layer of mulch was added and some areas turned with extra soil. The creeping strawberry and succulents were reined in a little to make room for a hopeful crop of autumn lettuce, spinach and chard. The new rose bush is doing really well and I think Magda and Damon's sculptures are enjoying the summer.

Elvis lives!

So a group of us head off to Cherokee N.C. to check out the semi-finals of the regional 'Ultimate Elvis' competition. There was a plethora of white jump suits, lots of hip shakin' and ladies fanning themselves from excitement.

Resident Artist Raffle!

Our resident artist raffle was a huge success! We were overwhelmed with the generosity of the students, staff and faculty here at Arrowmont this week. We raised a grand total of $695 selling tickets to many, raffling four pieces of one of a kind art. TJ created a piggy bank, while Kent produced a wooden ring to mimic an anvil. Martina crafted a wonderful teapot, and Victoria a wallpiece.

This was the scene in the lunch room as Jake Meder, faculty assistant for Dan Mayer's alternative book making class, drew names. He got everyone excited as he announced each winning ticket. It was exciting to see who the winners were and where our art would travel. Winners included a student in David Bultler's metals class- Tammy, two girls here for work study- Paige and Seana, and faculty member Dan Mayer! A great mix!

We had a special person to thank, our biggest supporter! Tammy donated quite generously to our cause, which will aid in the promotion and professional development of the resident artists during our time here at Arrowmont. We are grateful for her support, and the support of all who contributed. Thanks for helping to make our mission a success!!
